The Norlin era was an ambitious and explorative time for Gibson's production, analysing the ever shifting landscape of the market and redesigning old wheels to match new competition.  The Gibson J-50 debuted as their deluxe sloped shoulder Dreadnought acoustic, but a boom in popularity of the square shoulder, longer scale Martins in the 60s forced Gibson to take a second look at their historic design.
